How to house your TV with style

Stylish TV Design

Here at John Dick and Son we often find ourselves pondering the question of how to integrate TVs in a visually appealing way into our interior design schemes. And if we find it tricky we’re pretty sure many of you do too; after all, modern TVs are larger than ever.

We have come to the conclusion that the best approach is to acknowledge and embrace the TV as a necessary part of most living spaces. Most importantly they should be sized according to the room they inhabit. Secondly they need to be balanced with other objects and furniture so they don’t hog all the limelight.

House your tv

The trend for mounting TVs on walls is a sleek modern look if done properly with all the wires hidden but it is only half the solution. We would usually also suggest a piece of furniture below the TV to anchor it, so it isn’t just floating on the wall. The furniture can then provide useful storage as well as an attractive counterpoint to the TV and low, bench style units such as these are an ideal contemporary solution.

We also think it’s useful to embrace modern technology that allows satellite boxes and other TV equipment to be either stored conveniently away or accessed wirelessly. The relatively new ‘magic-eye’ technology is now being integrated into units such as these gloss ones from Portugese manufacturer Aleal and allow solid doors that hide equipment but still let you use your remote control.

Modern TVs can also look great integrated into a much more traditional piece of furniture, especially if it provides storage and shelving for other objects such as decorative ones that can offer an alternative focal point when the TV is not on. TVs can also sit snugly within large wall units and be easily swung out on a bracket to face any direction in the room.

The most important thing is that, whatever furniture you choose, it is attractive and contributes to the function and aesthetic of your room. We feel that slimmer TVs and increasingly hidden technology are opening up the options and could provide a good opportunity to refresh your own TV solution.
