Following the purchase of their stunning new home in nearby Thorntonhall our clients to be were making a sizeable move in more ways than one; relocating from their home in the North East of Scotland, to the outskirts of Glasgow and from an apartment to a five-bedroom house. This decision to start with a blank canvas in the new home was a very exciting but slightly daunting experience one would think!
That said, they were absolutely delighted to discover a high quality, furniture and interior design showroom right on their doorstep! Whilst scouring the internet for help and ideas it was our website that caught their eye as they liked the style and quality of our work, and couldn’t believe we were also situated so close to their new home. A visit to our extensive showroom was definitely on the itinerary for the next trip to Glasgow!
Before the big move, the search for ideas, inspiration and furniture had already begun. With such a large property however, the need to choose the best direction to take was becoming overwhelming, especially as our clients were keen to achieve a very polished look, but also keen to make as few mistakes as possible along the way. Keen for the house to be made homely as soon after moving day as possible, having assistance and direction from our interior design team helped make the process move as swiftly as possible with a definite design direction and prove to be invaluable.
Our brief was always that the interiors be both beautiful and functional, therefore we paid particular attention to how each room would be used and the requirements of the furniture in terms of size, storage and appearance. It was important to them that the house looked stunning, but equally it had to be more than a show house and also suit them and their lifestyle. We therefore paid a lot of attention to room layouts, providing scale plans to demonstrate how the furniture could suit the spaces and then moved on to look at finishes and colours in upholstery, cabinet and soft furnishings to pull together a complete design.
With clear ideas about the overall feel they hoped to achieve our task was to interpret our client’s vision and find them the right pieces to bring their dreams to life. It was also important to us to achieve a look that was very personal to them; this was achieved by mixing furniture from various manufacturers so that the pieces were complementary rather than matching thus making the overall selection unique to them. Their home was then accessorised with some eye-catching and unusual objects from our extensive range that also complement well art work and personal accessories brought from their previous home to give an overall, unique and personal feel.
On the ground floor there is an obvious flow as you move from room to room; certain colours, materials and textures are blended throughout to create a harmonious and cohesive feel. For example, a sunny, citrus colour scheme in the family room works beautifully and connects well through large, bi-fold doors into the beautiful garden, but it is also teamed with touches of charcoal, the predominant colour in the adjacent lounge and dining rooms. Here the sofas are light but interestingly textured with the sumptuous pillow back providing dashes of contrast in charcoal and slate tones. This is then further complemented by the decorative, French style coffee tables and consoles which are painted in calm, slate hues with natural wood tones.
Moving upstairs, each bedroom has its own personality; this is perhaps most obvious in the master bedroom where we created a sophisticated, boutique hotel look with a dark, over-sized headboard, generously proportioned furniture and decadent, layered, soft furnishings. The guest bedroom became affectionately known as ‘the enchanted forest’ with its contemporary, tree-inspired headboard being the centre of attention. The beautiful colours in this eye catching fabric were the inspiration for the calm, accents that appear in the room which are a lovely contrast against the simple, painted furniture. As we often find the little details also have a great impact and this is evident in the branch like pole and lamps!
Now to start work on ideas, plans and visions for the remaining rooms! We are delighted that our clients are excited to get started and have admitted they are thoroughly enjoying the process thus far, which is a success in our book!
Here is what they have said about our work so far;
“We feel very lucky to have discovered John Dick & Son, in particular, the interior design team who have made the whole process so enjoyable and straightforward. It has been a pleasure to meet with the girls, to see our vision come alive and to see the finished result come together with so much ease, which of course is also down to the efforts of the entire team!
The whole experience has been quite enjoyable, and the results speak for themselves, we are delighted with our new home. With such a big move from two different properties to our new home in Glasgow, we were unsure about where to start in order that we reached our aim of having a beautiful, stylish and functional home.
The designers at John Dick & Son understood what we wanted to achieve, they proposed a look, feel, and furniture that we love and that matched both our wishes and needs for the new house. We are looking forward to completing the house with the help of the team!”
