We recently made a video explaining function of an interior designer and what service our interior designers offer; we thought it might also be useful to provide a case study of a recent interior design project and letting you see the before and after pictures and get a couple of comments from the client.
We are extremely grateful to Mr & Mrs Henshelwood who have allowed us to post this blog and give you an insight into how we worked with them on their new interior.
Background
The initial contact with Mr & Mrs Henshelwood was in the showroom; they came in for a look around and a chat with Lynsey, one of our interior designers. Following that initial chat, a meeting at the house was arranged so that Lynsey could see the room and give some initial ideas. The visit was also useful to allow Lynsey to see the furniture pieces and artworks that the client wanted to retain. Following this we were able to prepare and agree a brief for the project.

Here’s what the Henshelwood’s had to say about that initial contact and home consultation:
“The initial contact was very friendly and the advice given freely with no pressure. This was one of the reasons we felt comfortable in inviting Lynsey into our home. Having Lynsey involved took all the pressure of our shoulders and opened our eyes to a whole raft of new ideas. She took on our wish to be bold and incorporated and expanded on any ideas we had.”
Here is the brief that we agreed with the client:
The brief discussed on the day was that my clients would love their lounge to be updated and given a new lease of life. Being keen art collectors and having many gorgeous pieces I took some inspiration from the artwork and also discussed colours that my client had recently seen in the media and been very keen on including, wanting to go for a bold look. Wow factor was the aim of the game!!
The function of the room was also very important as it was to include both seating and dining spaces. Some existing furniture was also staying in the room and I was pleased to incorporate them into the new design. On my first visit I suggested that the layout of the room could be changed to make better use of the space and worked on this further by drawing up plans in the studio to incorporate the furniture with some new pieces including a dining table & chairs, occasional chairs and lamp tables.
As soon as the design was approved we ordered up all of the furniture , wall coverings and curtain fabrics which enabled us to then quote an actual installation date; this is important to our clients and we pride ourselves on delivering on time.
“We were kept involved in every step of the journey. Before final decisions were made furniture was brought to the house to test the space and the design. This gave us added comfort that we were going down the right route. All the tradesman recommended by the design team were of the highest quality and were a joy to work with. The whole process from beginning to end was just so easy. Things happened when they were scheduled to and final installation of the furniture was done without any problems.”

The design process is a collaboration between our interior designers and the client, we work closely with them to produce designs that are functional and that meet the terms of the brief. On this occasion we were to produce something bold with WOW factor, did we achieve this?
Here is what the client thinks about the finished project:
“The final outcome was a joy. Lynsey visited to put the final touches to the room and even helped decide what paintings should hang in this room. She spent a morning with us hanging paintings throughout the house and ensuring everything was just right. The service from beginning to end was fantastic. Given that we actually totally redecorated and refurnished two rooms the pressure we felt was less than when we hung our first piece of wallpaper ourselves so many years ago. I would recommend the design team and John Dick & Son to anyone. My thanks to every one involved.”
We would like to thank the Henshelwoods for their custom and for allowing us to use their magnificent home as a case study for the blog.
